Metroart

Metro de Medellin is currently developing the “Trenes de la Cultura  program by displaying its authors’ signatures on the exterior of train cars and fragments of their literary works in the interior; murals for its authors have been installed in various stations. Likewise, we have exhibition sites in the Suramericana and Itagüí stations, as well as a series of murals and works by various artists using an array of techniques throughout the system.

Epifanio Mejia was the latest author to achieve recognition with a mural in his honor at Niquia station and fragments of his works on the seventh Train of Culture. This railway carriage thus joins the rest of the fleet, which already has cars with the signatures and texts by Leon de Greiff, Porfirio Barab Jacob, Fernando Gonzalez, Manuel Mejia Vallejo, Marco Fidel Suarez, and Tomas Carrasquilla.

Exhibition

The Itagüi and Suramericana stations have permanent exhibition halls. Currently, users may visit a photography exhibition with works by visual artists Laura Castaño, Diana Urrego and Juliana Arango at the Suramericana station and the paintings of  Armando Echeberri in the Itagüi station. These exhibitions will remain on display until the second week of June.

Literary Contest

A story for your city in 100 words or less 2009

Transporte Masivo del Valle de Aburra Limitada celebrated its anniversary of commercial operations while simultaneously giving continuity to the literary contest’s eighth edition in 2009. Once again, the contest was open to the creation of a short story, 100 words long –aside from the title- expressing and reflecting the realities of everyday life in the city where we live. The purpose of the contest is to foster literary creation among the residents of Medellin and the surrounding Metropolitan Area, especially among Metro users.

Bibliometro

The company launched the fourth Bibliometro, located at Niquía station, a new addition to the existing libraries at Itagüí, San Antonio and Acevedo stations. Each of the four libraries has an average 2,200 books. Users may become library members for free and borrow books they may enjoy while riding the system.

Niquia’s, Acevedo’s and Itagüí’s Bibliometros have free internet service provided by UNE and at Niquia they also offer art film presentations. In 2008, Metrolibraries lent a total of 30,343 texts. The Itagüi Bibliometro held 28 reading and art workshops for registered users free of charge.

Rolling Words

Over 50,000 books were published in 2008 under this program, which provides users with books so they can read and return them to the same dispenser free of charge. Thus, others may enjoy these readings while riding the Metro to and fro.

“Rolling Words” dispensers are available at the Madera, Santo Domingo, Suramericana, Floresta, Industriales, Aguacatala, Niquia, Bello, Acevedo, Andalucia, Universidad, San Antonio, Alpujarra, Poblado, Envigado, Itagüi, San Javier, and Juan XXIII stations.

Please remember that Rolling Words does not require a subscription, but it does require your commitment to returning the books to the dispensers in order to keep them in circulation.
