Environmental Managament
Being convinced that life quality implies continual improvement of environmental management, la Empresa de Transporte Masivo del Valle de Aburrá Limitada administers the environment based on a set of strategies to prevent, mitigate, amend, compensate and maximize the modifications that affect the environment. Due to the noise level generated by the Metro on the communities close to its railways, there is measurement carried out along the System to quantify the noise produced during commercial operation and maintenance, and obtain field data that facilitates the comparison of noise levels issued by the Metro and Metrocable, regarding the maximum levels allowed by Colombian legislation. Every month, there is control over water consumption at stations, ornamental fountains, and energy sub stations along the System in order to determine the consumption of water by the company and implement strategies that help reduce the amounts used. In addition, we implement the most adequate treatment alternatives from a technical, environmental and economic point of view, to reduce the impact of these waste waters on rivers and streams. The Metro system is clean technology that operates with electricity and does not use fuels that generate emissions that contaminate the atmosphere. The Company within its environmental management has implemented an energy efficient use and saving project. This project’s objective is to maximize this resource through good environmental practices, that allow a better consumption, which in turn, will determine strategies and behavioral changes to rationalize energy consumption among employees and suppliers. The production of wastes is a factor inherent to life: animals, plants and men generate wastes. Both operational and administrative activities generate solid and liquid wastes. Therefore, we must develop specific treatment strategies according to the type of wastes, following the prevailing regulations. In order to do it, special wastes, (those that due to their infectious, combustible, flammable, explosive, radioactive, volatile, corrosive, reactive or toxic characteristics), or that may be damaging to human health or the environment are sent to responsible, authorized entities to be incinerated under controlled conditions or to be properly disposed of in safety land fills. |
